Scary Hospital Visit!

On Thursday Mack had her six week shots at her well check. Later that day she woke up from a nap screaming! She wouldn't eat and I could not clam her down! I tried everything I could think of to get her under control, and by the time Charlie got home she and I were both crying. She had been crying for over two hours so I took her temp, and it was 100.1! So I called her doctor, and the oncall nurse said to go to the ER! We got in the car she calmed down and I finally got her to take a bottle of cool milk. Once she ate she seemed to be better so I called to the nurse back. She had me take her temp again and it had gone up to 100.8! So off the the ER we went. Once we got there and got checked in they took her temp again and it had gone up to 101.1! so they sent us straight back to see the doctor. He came in and told us that any child under 3 months should never get a fever like that and he wanted to do a full work up! At this point Charlie and I were both freaked out. The nurses came in and drew her blood, got a urine sample, and sent us to get a chest X-ray. At this point she was still really upset and hadn't eaten for awhile, she finally latched and nursed!! Which made me feel better, cause she hadn't nursed in almost 7 hours. They came in and set an IV in her little hand so they could start her on a round of antibiotics. They did this as a precaution. The doctor came back in and did a spinal tap on her, and this sounds really scary. But the doctor explained that they get the fluid from below where her cord ends and for me it was harder to watch them set the IV than do the spinal! She cried through all the blood work and only grunted from being bent over her big belly during the spinal. They then gave her some baby Tylenol and we call our parents. By the time we got moved upstairs we had the chest x-ray, urine, and some of the blood work back and they were all clean! Which the ER doctor told us was good and bad... good cause they were clean bad cause they still didn't know what was going on. Once they got us up to our room and checked in they took vitals on Mack and her fever had dropped!! My Dad showed up around 3 A.M. about the time they took Mack for her second round of blood work. The next afternoon the hospital's pediatrician came by and talked to us. He asked me a million questions and talked to us about her tests. At that point the cultures hadn't grown anything and he felt that her fever and mood changes were caused by a bad reaction to her shots. We stayed at the hospital the next day just waiting for test results, watching Mack and to get her more antibiotics. Saturday morning the doctor came in again. The cultures still had yet to show anything!! He did tell me that on both of her blood tests that her white blood count was slightly elevated and asked if we would like to get it retested. I told him to go ahead and run it! It cam back and her white cell count was back into the normal range!! So we were in the clear. Once we got to the 48 hr mark and nothing had shown on the tests and the cultures were still clean they chalked it up to bad reaction to her six week shots and they got us out of there! We got home last night and Mack got to take a bath, one of her favorite things, and got to sleep in her own bed! She slept through the night for the first time! The poor little thing was super sleepy, she was asleep by 9:30, ate at 6, and went back to sleep till 8! Thats a lot of sleep, and I needed that nice long stretch of sleep too! We are so so so lucky and blessed that our baby girl is okay. We have a follow up with her doctor tomorrow, and we will see what she has to say.
